    02/16/2017 Updates:

Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operator Examinations

Candidates who have already been approved and are currently eligible for a waterworks or wastewater works operator examination should have received an e-mail from the new exam administrator, AMP/PSI. The e-mail contains an individually-assigned VIR number as well as your eligibility information. Per the instructions in the e-mail, you may register for the exam at http://online.goamp.com/CandidateHome/candidateInformation.aspx.

    • From that page, select Water/Wastewater under Category, Virginia Board for Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operators and Onsite Sewage System Professionals under Program, and the appropriate class of license (for which you were approved by the Virginia Board) under Examination
    • On the next page, click Register for Exam and then select New User?. Enter your name exactly as you provided on the application you submitted to the Board office. For the SSN or Assigned ID# field, you must enter the VIR number provided in the e-mail you received from AMP/PSI. (If you did not receive this e-mail, contact the Board office.)

Please note that only the form of the examination is changing. There are no changes to existing licensees’ classes of licenses. There are also no changes to the classes of licenses being issued to candidates who pass the examination. If you are a Virginia Class 1 Waterworks Operator on December 31, 2016, you are a Virginia Class 1 Waterworks Operator on January 2, 2017.

Although ABC has operator certification programs with different classifications/levels and different entry requirements, those have no bearing on the classes and entry requirements in Virginia. Only the WWWOOSSP Board and/or legislative action can change the classes and entry requirements in Virginia.

PSI will administer the ABC national examination. Following is information about each examination, along with the conversion between ABC’s examination classes and Virginia’s license classes:

+UPDATE ON Class 6 Waterworks Examination
    • Because ABC does not offer a test equivalent to the Virginia Class 6 Waterworks exam, a custom examination must be developed and implemented. A group of subject matter experts recently met to select appropriate questions from the ABC item bank to develop the customized exam for Virginia Class 6 candidates.
    • The Class 6 examination is scheduled to be available March 23, 2017. Once the examination is available, any previously approved candidate will receive an email with registration information and a link to register for the exam with PSI/AMP. We apologize for the delay in the availability of the exam.

Additional information about the Waterworks & Wastewater Works Operator examinations:
    • PSI will offer a specific website for Virginia candidates that corresponds to our license classes instead of ABC’s (i.e., Virginia Class 1 is ABC Class IV, Virginia Class 2 is ABC Class III, etc.). This will help make sure candidates are clear on which exam they are taking and which study materials are applicable to their individual exams.
    • Candidates will be allowed to bring their own non-programmable calculators. ABC’s standard formula sheets will be provided at the exam site.
    • Diagnostic reports will be provided to both pass and fail candidates.
    • Exam fees can be paid by the candidate via phone or online. Acceptable payment forms include credit card, money order, cashier’s check, or a company check.
    • Anyone who holds a current license issued by the Board and who keeps the license current will not need to take the new examination to continue to be licensed.
    • There will be a ten-day wait period to retake a failed examination for Classes 1-4. There will be a 30-day wait period to retake a failed examination for Classes 5 and 6.

    Onsite Sewage System Professionals Examinations

    • Tests for the Onsite Sewage System Professions (installer, operator, and onsite soil evaluator) will continue as state-specific examinations, administered through PSI.
    • These examinations will also remain open-book at this time. The cost of the exams are $80, paid directly to PSI.

    ALL Exam Candidates

All candidates who are eligible to take any of the WWWOOSSP Board’s examinations at the time of the transition will have their candidate information transferred automatically to the new exam vendor.
